As part of the 2006 Miami County Comprehensive Plan, the area surrounding the County Road 25-A interchange with I-75 in Miami County, Ohio was designated as a “Special Planning Area” that required further study to determine appropriate land uses. Nearly12 years later, a gravel mining operation was proposed adjacent to the interchange. Strong, well organized public opposition to the proposal prompted County officials to commission a study per the Comprehensive Plan recommendation. The presentation will not only summarize the results of the study effort, it will describe the planning process, explore the area's unique natural and historical character, and explain how residents, property owners, and stakeholders were engaged. It will also demonstrate how land surrounding an interchange can be developed in phases to accommodate “appropriate land uses,” all while following sustainable growth practices.
