KC region planning directors recently participated in a day-long retreat to jointly identify issues of common interest and concern and to discuss how to collaborate more effectively and efficiently, as well as various staffing and organizational issues common to planning departments. Peter Pollock, FAICP, Manager of Western Programs for Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, facilitated the retreat. Topics explored included: Lessons learned around redevelopment, infill and higher density development in suburban areas. Evolution of retail industry and the impact on our communities and planning efforts. Potential peer exchanges. Staffing and organizational issues common to planning departments or functions. Regional transportation issues and local planning around them (funding, connected and autonomous vehicles, transit, economic development and safety). This session will present the outcomes of these discussions. Session will include a moderated panel of multiple planning directors (anticipated panel size of 5+ directors, potentially Jeffrey Williams, Jack Messer, Rob Richardson & others) who will talk about and expand on topics of discussion, areas of agreement and disagreement, and share any future joint actions and other outcomes.
