Overland Park, Kansas has a well-deserved reputation for a high quality of life but like many suburban communities faces challenges; growth pressure, a history of car- centric development patterns, and a lack of housing options, among others. A "moment of reflection" was needed to consider the community's next period of growth and development. This session will draw from the case study of Forward OP, the City's recent visioning and strategic planning effort. The planning process, a collaboration between the City, Chamber of Commerce and Visit OP was undertaken to challenge the community to create a shared vision for the future. This work relied on robust public and stakeholder involvement. The plan will be finished in late summer 2018 and will include a focused set of goals and specific actions from which other communities can learn. Key learning objectives/takeaway points from the session: 1. How can communities get people involved in the process and provide robust outreach and engagement? 2. How can suburban communities spark desired change while still preserving what citizens love about the community? 3. What is the best implementation model for a community-wide vision, how can it truly be operationalized by all civic institutions?
