As a professional interested in furthering my career in local government, I found out that it can be intimidating to approach management to request support for professional development. The key during those critical conversations is to get managers to help those lower on the ladder to prepare themselves to identify and take advantage of career advancement opportunities as they present themselves within the organization. However, you must be motivated to take the initiative to do your homework before you start these conversations. It is also important to have your personal career development plan in writing with clearly stated key milestones, including necessary resources. Share this with your management so they understand your long-term goals, so they can provide guidance and share with you what is needed to get there. Performance Appraisal time is also a good time to discuss career development and aspirations. It is important to discuss your Individual Development Plan (IDP) as a part of your performance review.
In some cases, management doesn’t promote or advance employees’ careers unless the employee clearly expresses self-interest in career advancement. Based on personal experience, I realized that it is better to be proactive and request assistance than to wait for an opportunity to come knocking at your door.
