Finding a balance of economic development and basic social (and environmental) welfare is a challenge in all American cities today, and in St. Louis in particular. Why is this so hard to achieve? This discussion explores the ambitions, complexities and contradictions of contemporary urban redevelopment in St. Louis through the designer’s lens.
- Attendees will learn about the challenges associated with making changes to neighborhoods in a politically fragmented context.
- Attendees will obtain a designer’s perspective on how drawings can be used to make dynamics of redevelopment more visible, towards achieving a balance of economic, social, and environmental objectives.
- Attendees will gain an understanding of tradeoffs that have been made in redevelopment through local case study examples in St. Louis, Missouri.
