Participants will be joining nine APA Divisions as we partner with the Fruitvale Unity Council to beautify the area surrounding the Fruitvale BART Station. This is a great opportunity to support an incredibly vibrant community, and to live out our values as professional planners. We appreciate your willingness to help out! Our DAY OF SERVICE will include:

• Community Mural
• Tile Art Treatment for Trash Receptacles
• Community Cleanup
• Pop-up Community Outreach with The Unity Council

During the lunch break, volunteers will be treated to a talk and Q&A session led by staff members of the Unity Council. Topics will include the history of the Fruitvale Community and The Unity Council's past, present, and future efforts to promote social equity and improve quality of life by building vibrant communities where everyone can work, learn and thrive.

Sponsoring APA Divisions include:

APA Divisions will be partnering with the Fruitvale Unity Council – known for their joint partnering with local government and BART to develop the Fruitvale TOD Station and Village. Giving members the option to arrive early for the conference, they can volunteer for a day in doing various community improvements. The Beautification Project will target areas with high propensities of graffiti and vandalism along highly travelled pathways leading to the Fruitvale BART Station. One business wall will be painted with a mural and 6-8 trash receptacles will be tiled with art. Both the wall and the trash receptacles will be designed and directed by a local artist, Favianna Rodriguez. Additionally, trash clean up and tabling of the Unity Council’s services for community members will be done near and around the BART Station. The Fruitvale BART station is in close proximity to the 2019 National Planning Conference location making it easily accessible to members attending the conference or who live in the area.
