The purpose of this event is to discuss public engagement and how to respond in difficult situations. In November 2018, a local planner became involved in a viral news story after ‘master race’ comments were directed towards her by elected officials. Triveece Penelton, AICP, will share insights and tips after going through the experience. The session will focus on media treatment, coordination, branding, and advocacy in the age of social media, viral video, and clickbait.
Participants in the event will obtain knowledge regarding:
(1) appropriate responses to difficult public situations or comments,
(2) strategies to manage media outlets (including social media), and
(3) opportunities to support fellow planners and advocacy issues.
Planners will learn about a local story that gained national attention and strategies on how to respond in future situations. Others who may have experienced similar situations, ranging from a difficult attendee at a public meeting to inappropriate personal comments, will also be invited to share their story. The event will provide a local planners with an increased understanding of sensitive topics and how to support fellow professionals in challenging situations.
