Overview

Is your zoning ordinance out of date? Do your sign regulations comply with the Supreme Court’s decision on Reid v. Gilbert? This session will explore how planning policy, development trends and land use law intersect with local regulation. Consultant Jason Fondren will review issues that are compelling communities to change their zoning rules. The discussion will present strategies to make zoning codes user-friendly, to respond to land use trends (i.e., food trucks, tiny homes, short-term rentals and more) and to comply with First Amendment case law. Following the presentation, planners will discuss how their cities are addressing affordable housing, sustainability and other policy issues through local regulations.
