MORE SESSION DETAILS

The Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela have stood for more than eight centuries. Every year, thousands of Ethiopian pilgrims - and an increasing number of international tourists - visit the site. Over the past decade, Lalibela has developed rapidly, significantly changing the community and the physical landscape. In 2016, Columbia University and Addis Ababa University graduate students delved into the site's history, experienced the present, and planned for the future. Students analyzed Lalibela's landscape, growth, transportation, tourism, and management, and developed recommendations and proposals for preserving the churches' heritage.
