  • A template for planning natural or agricultural land protection
  • Differentiate between natural and agricultural land values
  • County and rural planning partnerships and fund leveraging

The Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission created a systematic process to aid natural and agricultural land preservation decision making with limited financial resources and partners. Staff first implemented two county-wide GIS assessments to determine the potential quality of existing lands, then developed additional GIS analyses that set priorities based on the assessments, preservation goals, and principles of ecology. WCPARC deliberately defined broad priorities and has used the project as a tool for engaging with existing and prospective partner agencies in order to strengthen acquisition decisions, support stewardship, and guide private landowner outreach.
