  • Need and importance of a neutral, online, public-engagement platform for reestablishing trust between the public and decision makers
  • Barriers to encouraging community members to participate online and share their opinions and ideas
  • Challenges of online public engagement and some ways to counter these challenges

There is widespread cynicism and mistrust within the public on many issues concerning city development. Many people feel that their voices are not heard and their opinions do not matter. Current ways of consulting with the public are inadequate. They do not always accommodate a varied audience and outreach tools are outdated. With the increase of digital identities, people hide under the guise of anonymity to voice their opinions, resulting in uncivil discussions related to issues. Creating an online platform that fosters community dialogue is a grassroots approach to consultation that aims to eliminate the lack of trust.
