APA receives $50K grant to assist disaster recovery

APA and the APA Foundation have been awarded $50,000 from the Pisces Foundation, which seeks ways to accelerate to a world where people and nature thrive together. Grant funds will support recovery planning in communities affected by recent hurricanes, helping them to become safer and stronger.

Initially, APA will use approximately half of the funds to create new resources — adding to those always available from APA's Hazards Planning Center — and establish a network of experts to provide technical assistance to disaster-struck communities. The goal is ensuring that climate resilience and green infrastructure are widely accepted in their recovery plans. In Phase Two, the remaining funds will support a volunteer Recovery Planning Assistance Team.
Foundation offers proposal assistance

Help is available for members who intend to respond to the the grant RFP from Partners for Places. For example, you may ask APA Foundation staff to review your draft proposal, solicit help searching APA's research resources, or request a Community Planning Assistance Team. Send requests for proposal review or technical assistance to foundation@planning.org. Submit draft proposals to APA for review by July 26 and final proposals to Partners for Places by July 31.

From scholar to leader

The APA Foundation makes the planning profession more accessible by awarding scholarships to student members. One such member is Max Sokol, AICP, who received the Charles Abrams Scholarship in 2011. Now a supervising planner with WSP and president of the APA New York Metro Chapter, Sokol pays it forward by serving on the APA Foundation Grantmaking Committee.

APA NEWS
U.N. forum update

A key concern of the U.N. High-Level Political Forum is the critical role of water in meeting the U.N.'s Sustainable Development Goals. APA is sharing its extensive array of water resources with forum participants, while our Plan4Health initiative is finding its way into discussions on sustainable development and resilience.
From our blog

APA Ambassador Diana Wilson, AICP, conducted an interactive workshop for elementary and high school students in LaGrange, Texas, that probed the town's history and asked participants to suggest new places for paths, shelter, and play.

Ohio Planners4Health focused on producing three deliverables from its year-long project: conducting a chapter-wide survey; hosting a statewide roundtable with key stakeholders; and producing a final summary of project findings, with action items.

People Behind the Plans: Kate Hartley

Kate Hartley directs the Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development in San Francisco. In this new podcast episode, she and Courtney Kashima, AICP, discuss how the city's Affordable Housing Bonus Program leverages incentives to create affordable housing and why it is so difficult to deliver units for San Francisco's middle-income households.
