NATIONAL COMMUNITY PLANNING MONTH
Planning Month closes on a high note

Planning Month ends today with news of celebrations in communities nationwide.
  • Community members, city employees, and elected officials gathered in Hamilton, Ohio, to celebrate the designation of RiversEdge at Marcum Park as a 2018 Great Place in America.
  • Kilgore, Texas, Mayor Ronnie Spradlin proclaimed October as Community Planning Month. To drive home its support for planning, the city council agreed to spend $112,750 to update the comprehensive plan and $60,000 to assess the condition of Kilgore streets and sidewalks.
  • In Tyler, Texas, the Planning and Zoning Department organized "Build a City" at the public library, where participants used Lego, Play-Doh, and drawing materials to build miniature towns.
  • Today, the National Association of Counties is hosting a webinar to highlight the important role planning plays in creating healthy, safe, vibrant counties. Topics include the high cost of housing, counties' unique role in addressing affordable housing challenges, and best practices.

APA staff visit NBM

APA's Washington, D.C., staff took a cue from the 2018 Planning Month theme — Housing as Community Infrastructure — and visited two housing-related exhibits at the National Building Museum. "Evicted" is based on Matthew Desmond's best-selling book and "Making Room" examines how changing household demographics shape housing laws and development.
