Today's final passage of the $1.9 trillion relief bill is an important legislative win for planners everywhere who pressed Congress over the last year to provide direct and flexible relief for our communities and states. Your emails, tweets, testimonies, and virtual meetings helped secure emergency aid for local and state governments, housing, transit, and broadband. Recovery is one of four APA legislative priorities.

Learning Circle Recap
A planning manager's perspective on "WTH just happened"

There is no playbook, guide, or example on how to be a planning supervisor during a pandemic — all we have is each other to learn from. Aimee Nassif, AICP, hosted a facilitated Learning Circle discussion, "2020, The Year in Review: A Planning Manager's Perspective on WTH Just Happened?" Here are some key takeaways and ideas from the discussion that you can implement in your workday.

Making room for the river

Flood resilience bridges different areas of planning, including transportation, parks, economic development, hazard mitigation, emergency management, and comprehensive land use, but these plans are often poorly integrated with one another. Using the Plan Integration for Resilience Scorecard (PIRS), researchers studied the Dutch city of Nijmegen to determine how integrated planning can reduce flooding vulnerability.

Planning History Timeline
Jane Jacobs, a journalist with no professional architectural or planning experience, published The Death and Life of Great American Cities in 1961. Jacobs's book eventually led the urban planning field to see urban renewal more critically and directly inspired the new urbanism movement in planning. Visit the timeline.
