The City of Walnut Creek is seeking a full-time Housing Assistant Planner to join the Housing Team of the Community Development Department.


The current salary range is $98,954 to $119,055 annually. Placement in the range will depend on qualifications.

About the Housing Team

The Housing Team is a conscientious and passionate group of professionals dedicated to meeting the needs of the City's low- and moderate- income residents who consistently work toward solutions for the current housing crisis experienced throughout the region. The team consists of four staff members who work collaboratively to ensure programs and policies are administered effectively and efficiently. The Housing Team is committed to creating a positive work environment through creativity, innovation, and teamwork.

Over the last decade the City has adopted progressive housing policies, including Inclusionary and Commercial Linkage Ordinances. About the Position

The Assistant Planner is the first level in the professional planning series. Under general supervision, the Assistant Planner provides technical and professional support of the affordable housing and community grant programs, including the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Demonstrates a passion for and advocacy of social services for vulnerable residents and furthering the aims of housing affordability and diversity of the community.
  • Has experience in the field of affordable housing and/or community grantmaking.
  • Is self-directed, takes initiative in getting the job done, not only at the task level but in thinking more broadly regarding strategy and process improvement.
  • Is extremely well organized, timely and accurate in managing multiple projects simultaneously, and in keeping track of even the smallest details and meeting deadline commitments.
  • Provides excellent customer service to both the public and co-workers.
