Position Description

Transportation and Mobility planners are responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of short- and long-term objectives related to multi-modal transportation planning, neighborhood traffic management, and infrastructure development to shape and support the city's growth. This is accomplished by collaborating with peers in other departments and partner agencies, completing assigned tasks and projects; interpreting and applying plans, ordinances, and other policies; coordinating the submission of grant applications and administering transportation grants; presenting data and information through written and oral presentations; and preparing recommendations for updates to plans, policies, and standards.

Typical Tasks

  • Assists in developing long-range multi-modal transportation policies, plans, programs, and initiatives by researching and identifying trends, issues, and opportunities; organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data; applying local, state, and federal regulations; coordinating and participating in community engagement events; and collaborating with agency partners.
  • Coordinates the submission and implementation of transportation planning and infrastructure grants.
  • Collaborates with Engineering and Transportation Engineering staff in the development, implementation, and maintenance of plans and technical standards for the city's street network in support of multi-modal goals and placemaking efforts.
  • Collects, manages, and maintains data related to transportation and land use.
  • Prepares CIP project submissions for bicycle and pedestrian improvements based on approved plans and established priorities.
  • Conducts fieldwork as necessary to aid in evaluation of transportation facilities.
  • Assists members of the public, committees, and partner agencies with transportation planning issues and questions by responding to questions and inquiries, organizing and facilitating community engagement events, and providing information through presentations and digital platforms.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Related Experience

  • Master's degree in planning, transportation planning, urban studies, public administration, geography, landscape architecture, transportation engineering or related area of study with one year of transportation planning experience

or

  • Bachelor's degree and three years of transportation planning experience.

Certifications

  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), Professional Engineer (PE), Registered Landscape Architect, or Professional Transportation Planner (PTP) or ability to obtain within 2 years of hire.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in grant coordination and administration.
