Solar Energy

The city's zoning ordinance includes standards for solar energy collection panels (Sec. 20-20.8). It permits them as accessory uses only in all zones; commercial systems require site plan and special exception approval. Installation requires a building permit and plan; installation must be done by qualified solar installers. Standards for installation differ for residential versus nonresidential uses and address color, signage, placement, architectural compatibility, screening, setbacks, glare, and height. Ground-mounted systems are limited to 800 SF per lot for residential uses and 1,200 SF per lot for nonresidential uses. Abandoned systems (those out of service for a continuous 12-month period) must be removed by owners within 6 months of notification.
