The city's animal code was amended in 2012 to allow the keeping of chickens with a permit within the city (§86-5.g). The ordinance provides definitions and allows for one permit per R-1 or R-2 parcel. Up to 4 chickens may be kept; roosters are prohibited. Standards address coop design, location, setbacks, sanitation, and other public health requirements.

The city's animal code was also amended in 2015 to allow beekeeping in the city (§86.7). Beekeeping is allowed in R-1 and R-2 districts, with a limit of two hives per parcel, and a permit is required. Conditions address equipment location placement, screening, setbacks, maintenance, city inspections, flyway barriers, and nuisance/safety issues.

A city website offers links to the chicken-keeping permit and supplemental information.
