Losing Ground: Farmland Protection in the Puget Sound Region
By: , Dennis Canty
This report, published by the American Farmland Trust, examines farmland loss in Washington state’s Puget Sound region. It notes that county governments can shape farmland preservation in a number of ways and examines how the region’s 12 counties are implementing land use regulations, purchase and transfer of development rights, property tax relief, and economic development to protect farmland. The report establishes benchmarks for good agricultural protection programs, focusing on land-use regulations; identifies regional challenges to farmland protection; and offers five recommendations to help counties strengthen their farmland protection programs.
