Farmland Protection

This guide from the British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture’s Strengthening Farming Program offers guidelines for maximizing compatibility between uses in Edge Planning Areas, or agricultural and urban lands near Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) boundaries. The guide applies to a planning area of 600 meters spanning both agricultural and urban lands on both sides of the ALR boundary to minimize conflicts between non-farm residents and active agricultural uses.

Part 3 of the guide offers a range of urban-side edge planning design objectives, strategies, and implementation tools that can be used to promote rural-urban compatibility, including four different buffer design options.
