In the face of climate change, planners around the world are preparing their coastlines for the increasing hazards from sea-level rise and volatile weather. As with any planning project, coastal-resilience projects must be responsive to local environments, concerns, and priorities. At the same time, best practices that are developed across the world can often be adapted to local contexts. Planners will present projects that they have worked on across six continents, including work in the Netherlands, the Dominican Republic, the Philippines, Indonesia, Jamaica, South Africa, Tanzania, and Honduras. Best practices such as building local partnerships and focusing on eco-system based adaptation and green infrastructure will be shared, along with advice on where there are limits to transferability. The presenters will discuss differences in how communities address problems based on local attitudes, planning cultures, and the resources that may be available. The role of international agreements and institutions in addressing resiliency will also be examined.
