LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Identify how to develop tools for effective ADU ordinances for new units and for legalization of existing units.

  • Learn about effective outreach tools to inform, market, and brand San Francisco's ADU program to property owners and elected officials.

MORE SESSION DETAILS

San Francisco’s award-winning Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) program was introduced in 2014 to respond to the local, regional, and statewide housing shortage. Since its inception as a program to increase density at apartment buildings participating in soft-story seismic retrofitting, it has evolved into a popular program for single-family and multifamily property owners to participate. ADU's can increase the city’s housing stock without sacrificing neighborhood character, design, or dwelling unit quality. Visit sites that have taken advantage of the program, which encourages property owners to convert underutilized areas into new dwelling units by waiving some planning code requirements.
