San Francisco: Old and New TDM

LEARNING OUTCOMES

• Understand the transportation challenges facing San Francisco planners, and the role that TDM policies and their application is having on overall transportation performance in San Francisco.
• Discern between TDM policies, comparing and contrasting new policies with older TDM concepts, some of which are still in use.
• Apply some of the tools available in the TDM toolbox — San Francisco has tried or is implementing many of them within a very challenging regulatory environment.

In recent decades, San Francisco has steadily grown in population and density. In 2018, more people live here than ever before, and the population is expected to top a million by 2040 or sooner. In a built-out city such as San Francisco, the adoption and application of TDM policies can effectively ensure that its expanding multimodal transportation system is sustainable.
