WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

  • How the United Kingdom's "garden city" movement aims to establish new garden cities
  • How to identify key opportunities and challenges in planning for new garden cities, including inclusiveness and community engagement, design and quality charter, technological innovations, development viability, infrastructure funding/phasing, sustainable transport, and economic development

MORE SESSION DETAILS

England's long history of planning for growth through the delivery of garden cities is being revived with a commitment to deliver over 20 new garden towns and villages in the next two decades. The Town and Country Planning Association's Garden City Principles are informing the master planning and delivery of numerous new garden communities throughout the United Kingdom. Ebenezer Howard's aspirational model for garden cities as an idealized way of living has delivered some notable successes in the United Kingdom and internationally in the intervening 116 years. The revival of the "garden city" concept brings many opportunities as well as challenges for planners, elected officials, developers and local communities. Are the high ideals of Howard still relevant today? How can garden cities harness the benefits of inclusive community engagement, economic development, community land ownership, the delivery of sustainable transport, zero-carbon energy-positive technology, and green infrastructure? Examine the historic and new garden city approach and the potential of the concept for success in our times.
