Benefits of Compact, Mixed Use Development

This report relates the findings of numerous studies from diverse sources and with varied approaches that indicate the economic and environmental benefits of compact development. The findings reported include improved property values due to walkability and multiple transportation options, access to multiple housing types in proximity to jobs and reduced car dependency, and preserved watersheds and development in and near existing communities. It also notes that walkability benefits public health and that compact neighborhoods can better foster a sense of place that encourages growth and investment. One section focuses on climate change-related benefits from compact development, such as emissions savings from the availability of different transportation options, which the author supports through municipal and regional reports.
