This article provides an in-depth analysis of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Reed v. Town of Gilbert and includes guidance for drafting or amending local sign codes. Following a discussion of the history of the Reed case, the authors explain the majority and concurring opinions submitted by Supreme Court justices. Then they address a series unresolved questions about specific types of sign regulations before presenting a series of recommendations for sign code drafters and administrators.
