active Transportation

This report argues that off-street active transportation facilities spur economic development. The first chapter examines active transportation trends, such as the increase in bicycle ridership in America, and trail oriented development. The second chapter examines ten case studies of active transportation-friendly real estate development projects, with the first seven of the ten cases located along trails. The third chapter examines four “Catalytic Bicycle and Pedestrian Infrastructure Projects,” of which three could be classified as off-street trail facilities. The authors conclud that developers should look to invest in both on-site facilities and partner with government agencies to invest in and improve both on-street and off-street networks.
