This article makes the case that transit-oriented development principles can be effective for decreasing automobile dependence outside of rail transit station areas. The author found that housing type and tenure, local and subregional density, bus service, and parking availability had a greater affect on car ownership, commuting, and grocery trips than access to rail transit service.
