Accessory Dwelling Units

This report summarizes local approaches to zoning for accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in metropolitan Boston. Individual sections address study background, housing in the Boston area, concerns about neighborhood character, baseline findings from an earlier study, master plans and housing production plans, recent changes to local zoning codes, the regulation of ADUs without residency restrictions, in-law apartments, short-term rentals, municipalities with no zoning for ADUs, permitting numbers, and recommendations.
