Autonomous Vehicles

This guide presents recommendations to support autonomous vehicles (AVs). It provides Automation Principles, developed by the Department of Transportation, which include:

• Prioritizing safety;
• Remaining technologically neutral;
• Modernizing regulations;
• Encouraging consistency in regulatory and operational environments;
• Preparing proactively for AV; and
• protecting and enhancing freedoms

Additionally, it discusses agency roles and implementation strategies related to autonomous vehicles. Finally, Appendix B provides a list of themes and concerns identified during the stakeholder engagement process, including the need for public education, impacts on mobility and accessibility, and roadway readiness for AV implementation.
