FAICP Statement

Stan Clauson is a distinguished planner and designer with a community-focused career that spans economic development, urban design, sustainable practices, and professional service, all aimed at improving quality of life while contributing to the profession of planning. In a career spanning multiple disciplines, cities, and continents, Stan has transformed the communities where he has served, through vision and implementation of projects linking economic development, community amenities, and sustainable transportation. He has mentored many aspiring planners who have gone on to make significant contributions themselves. Stan’s contributions as a planning leader have benefited planners in Colorado and across the nation.

About Me

Stan Clauson moved to Aspen, Colorado from New England in 1994 to assume the post of Community Development Director for the City of Aspen. After serving in that role for over four years, he reprised his former consulting role in planning and landscape architecture, and opened a firm in Aspen. Stan is an avid Europhile and makes frequent trips to Europe to look at planning and urban design projects, and take in the occasional bike trip. He is married with three grown children and some grandchildren, all of whom are happily located in Colorado. Finally, he has been a yoga practitioner for over a decade and has completed teacher training to be assured of a fallback profession.

Professional Biography

Stan Clauson, FAICP, ASLA heads a planning and landscape architecture firm in Aspen, Colorado, with a specialization in community revitalization and resort development. He is the former Community Development Director for the cities of Aspen, CO and Montpelier, VT, and also worked as Urban Design Planner for the City of Newton, MA. Clauson received his Master of Landscape Architecture degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and has been a certified planner since 1984. He has been a frequent lecturer on resort planning and transportation issues in the U.S. and abroad and served as president of the APA Colorado Chapter. In 2022, he was elected into the Colelge of Fellows of AICP.
