The town's municipal code permits accessory use solar energy systems in all districts; systems larger than 1,000 square feet require a conditional use permit. It includes a section on alternative energy systems covering wind, geothermal, and solar (§17.84.130.B). Solar energy systems must be accessory uses on a lot; the code provides standards for ground-mounted and roof-mounted systems covering height and placement. Systems larger than 1,000 square feet require a conditional use permit and letter of no objection from the nearby Naval Air Station. A building permit is required; the code lists application requirements and construction standards. Systems not operating for 6 months must be repaired or removed.
The use table in the municipal code lists roof- and ground-mounted solar systems and solar water heaters as permitted in all districts if less than 1,000 square feet and requiring a conditional use permit if greater than 1,000 square feet (Table 17.20.070).
The municipal code defines various types of alternative energy systems, including solar energy systems (§17.08.010).
