Solar Energy

The town's subdivision regulations define two solar-related terms (§89-6) and address solar siting. Lot standards state that lot configuration should be designed to maximize the use of solar energy on building sites, and that parking areas should be laid out in relation to buildings to maximize solar gain (§89-28.A & B). Street design standards state that streets shall run in east-west directions to maximize solar energy utilization access (§89-36.C).

The town's zoning regulations define "solar energy system" (§105-15). The code provides performance standards for solar considerations. Standards address setbacks for solar energy systems and address the clearing of vegetation to obtain solar access (§105-54.A). The code also requires dwelling units in developments to be oriented wherever possible to maximize use of direct sunlight; when proposed buildings are located near one another, shadow projections must ensure that no solar access is blocked (§105-54.B).
