Food Systems | Urban Livestock

The city's animal care and control code was amended in 2011 and allows urban domestic fowl (chickens) in residential districts so long as owner complies with conditions, including a limit of 7 fowl kept for egg production only; no profit may be made from eggs; chickens must be kept in coops, with standards given; and no roosters are permitted (ยง6-154). Other livestock are prohibited unless enclosures are at least 100 feet from existing dwellings or businesses, 500 feet from food service or processing establishments, or 25 feet from residential property lines.

Also within the animal care and control ordinance, a 2004 ordinance allows for beekeeping (Article 6.8). The ordinance provides definitions and addresses hives, flyway fencing, water, general maintenance, queens, colony densities, identification, inspection, and compliance.
