NATIONAL COMMUNITY PLANNING MONTH |
The 2018 Great Places People's Choice is ...
Riverwalk in Tampa, Florida! Tampa's Riverwalk has transformed the city and brought a valuable public space to the entire community. The vision originated in the 1970s and evolved through different plans and phases, ultimately taking 40 years — and six mayors — to complete. Now it is a linear park along the Hillsborough River through the heart of downtown, opening opportunities for residents and tourists to stroll, bike, and visit Tampa's cultural attractions.
Congratulations to Tampa and the other People's Choice finalists: the Detroit Riverfront; Katy Trail in Missouri; Washington's Navy Yard and Capitol Riverfront; and Uncas Leap Heritage Area in Norwich, Connecticut. |
Thank you for your advocacy
This year, National Community Planning Month engaged more elected officials than ever. Planners reached out to more than 100 federal, state, and local officials and their staffs to talk about planning's vital role in delivering needed housing. APA members hosted community discussions, met with representatives, collaborated on proclamations, and launched new initiatives. Thanks to all for publicly recognizing the value of planning throughout October. |

INTERNATIONAL PLANNING |
November 8 is World Town Planning Day
Tomorrow, be sure to visit APA's WTPD webpage and enjoy a collective pat on the back for the work planners everywhere do to make safe, attractive, and prosperous communities. In partnership with the APA International Division, we will recognize WTPD with a suite of multimedia resources focusing on global issues like planning for migrants and refugees, international smart cities, and thriving border regions. Use #WTPD2018 to follow along and join the conversation. |

Also launching tomorrow in honor of WTPD is the Global Planners Network's YouTube channel. GPN demonstrates that issues like citizen engagement, natural resource conservation, housing affordability, and transportation alternatives are common among nations, regardless of government systems. |
Exchange program expands to Canada
The APA International Division is pleased to announce expansion of its International Planner Exchange Program to include Canada as well as the United Kingdom. IPE started in 1993, paused in 2006, and restarted in 2015 with exchanges solely between American and UK planners. The program offers individual planners opportunities to experience one-to-one exchanges in an international setting. Participating planners host each other at home for two weeks. Contact the division's Miroo Desai for more information. |
