Planner I - Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires a Bachelor's Degree in planning, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture or related field, and one year experience in land use planning or historic preservation, preferably in a local government setting. The equivalent combination of education and related work experience may be considered.

$61,284.00 - $76,605.00 Salary/year

Planner II - Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires a Bachelor's Degree in City/Regional Planning, Urban Design, or related field, and four years of professional land use planning experience. Prefer Master's Degree in City/Regional Planning, Urban Design, or a related field, and four to five years progressively responsible professional planning and urban design experience, preferably in a local government setting. The equivalent combination of education and related work experience may be considered.

$67,566.00 - $84,458.00 Salary/year

Special Certifications and Licenses for both:

Valid Driver’s License

AICP Certification encouraged at point when eligibility requirements are met.

Planner I – Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of planning.
  • Ability to understand, apply, and interpret City ordinances, policies, and procedures, particularly those related to development standards.
  • Ability to perform independent research on planning and community development issues.
  • Ability to utilize GIS software applications and produce maps and statistical data.
  • Ability to prepare and present technical reports and recommendations in oral, written, and graphic form; ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to remain calm and diplomatic in difficult situations.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment, discretion, and initiative in completing assignments.
  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
  • Work is performed onsite. The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Ability to understand, apply, and interpret City ordinances, policies, and procedures, particularly those related to development standards.
  • Ability to prepare and present technical reports and recommendations in oral, written, and graphic form; ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to utilize GIS software applications and produce maps and statistical data
  • Ability to remain calm and diplomatic in difficult situations.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment, discretion, and initiative in completing assignments.
  • Ability to attend occasional evening meetings (generally less than once a month).
  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.

Planner I - Essential Job Functions:

  1. Assists in the development and maintenance of long-range plans, including the City’s comprehensive plan, neighborhood, and small area plans.
  2. Assists in implementing recommendations of comprehensive and small area plans and other studies.
  3. Reviews and makes recommendations regarding annexation requests and strategies; prepares annexation studies and plans.
  4. Prepares land use and zoning studies.
  5. Develops and maintains planning policies, procedures, and required supporting documentation (i.e., maps, databases, drawings).
  6. Participates in special projects teams with other City staff.
  7. May assist with transportation planning initiatives.
  8. Assists with special projects workshops, and community meeting/forums. Must be available to attend some night meetings.
  9. Performs all other duties as may be assigned to meet organizational needs.

Planner II - Essential Job Functions:

  1. Conducts research and analysis for long-range planning and assists in authoring plans including the City’s Comprehensive Plan, small-area and corridor plans, and other special long-range studies.
  2. Assists with obtaining public input into long-range plans through surveys, workshops, and other engagement strategies.
  3. Assists with the implementation of long-range plans.
  4. Reviews and makes recommendations regarding annexation requests and strategies; prepares annexation analyses and studies; prepares maps, materials, and presentations for meetings and reports.
  5. Assists Zoning Division with evaluating whether rezoning requests meet adopted long-range planning policies and recommendations.
  6. Attends training classes about customer service, long-range planning, community engagement, annexation, computer software, and other topics as needed to learn new standards, processes, and systems. Maintains continuing education credits as needed for optional certifications.
  7. Assists with special projects workshops, and community meeting/forums. Must be available to attend some night meetings.
  8. Performs all other duties as may be assigned to meet organizational needs.
