Compensation: Planner II: $74,000 - $101,000 / Senior Planner: $81,000 - $109,000
Salary ranges listed are evaluated in regard to relevant years of experience to determine fair and equitable pay. This is a full-time, in office position.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Process applications for Change of Zoning, Site Plan Review, Replat, and Plats of land in the City and prepare recommendations for review by the Planning & Zoning Commission and final action by the City Council.
- Administer applications for variances, special use permits, special exceptions, and related matters for action by the Board of Adjustment. Administer annexation requests and studies regarding the incorporation of areas into the City of Johnston and prepare matters for action by the council.
- Compile and analyze data on economic, social, and physical factors affecting housing and land use. Prepare graphic and narrative reports using ESRI ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS online, and other associated tools.
- Assist the city in developing and maintaining a comprehensive plan, including recommendations for possible amendment to the adopted plan.
- Assist in the implementation of the comprehensive plan and research and recommendation on ordinances and other city policy documents.
- Develop and implement grant-funded programs through governmental agencies and private groups by studying printed and related information about specific programs to supplement local annual budget allocations.
- Prepare grant applications according to the required format and specific instructions.
Requirements Include:
Graduation from an accredited four (4) or five (5) year college or university with major course work in planning, landscape architecture, architecture, or related curriculum
Planner II - 3 years experience and AICP Certified or ability to obtain within one year.
Senior Planner - 4 years experience and AICP Certified or ability to obtain within one year.
Prior experience with geographic information systems and other related software programs is highly desired.
Knowledge of:
- Modern business practices related to receiving, verifying, storing, and retrieving financial and operational information for business purposes.
- Demonstrated proficiency in operating standard office equipment like computers, word processors, typewriters, calculators, radios, telephones, and copying machines.
- Ability to acquire knowledge of various forms, documents, and workflow processes within the office.
- Understanding of various functions carried out in the office and how they relate to essential functions performed.
- Ability to maintain filing systems, reference and resource documents in a manner consistent with the specified purpose.
Other Requirements:
The job involves mostly sedentary work, including sitting, occasional walking and standing, bending, as well as lifting and carrying light objects such as paper which generally weigh 5 lbs. or less. The aptitudes required for the job include numerical and clerical skills, the ability to perceive forms, clear vision of 20" or less, excellent eye/hand/foot coordination, hand and finger dexterity, motor coordination, well-developed hearing, and conversation skills. This job involves working in an office environment. The job does not require much physical strength or extensive movement. There are no significant environmental or work hazards present. There is an occasional need to drive a vehicle to deliver items to different locations within the city.
