We have important jobs to do at SDOT. We plan and look after the city's transportation network, add more bicycle and pedestrian paths, take care of over 240 bridges, and help people get better access to the regional transit system. Job Responsibilities:

  • Serves as SDOT's principal urban design expert to the department, Mayor, and City Council.
  • Maintains responsibility for assignments that are complex and highly sensitive in nature, where substantial judgment and initiative are essential to make recommendations and resolve problems.
  • Develops policies and plans for mobility, access, and public realm uses within city street rights-of-way.
  • Leads urban design studies and develops innovative conceptual design plans.
  • Exercises strong project and program (e.g., Complete Streets, Public Life) management skills, establishes performance measures, and conducts ongoing evaluations of their effectiveness.
  • Establishes street design guidelines and standards (Streets Illustrated) and ensures projects planned and designed are consistent with Seattle's Complete Streets policies and practices.
  • Authoritatively negotiates public and private development project contributions.
  • Serves as a core member of the division's management team.
  • Leads and develops a team of professional staff.
  • Creates and manages section work plan and budget; establishes program objectives; assesses performance; assigned resources; and directs consultants.
  • Supports department goals in promoting diversity and social justice.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in urban planning or design, transportation planning, architecture, landscape architecture, or related field.

Experience:

  • Five (5) years of project management experience for large, complex urban design and/or transportation projects.
  • Three (3) years of direct supervisory experience, including staff development and conducting performance evaluations.

OR: An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties. Though not requirements, strong candidates will have some of the following experience or are able to describe comparable experience:

  • Ability to effectively work in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base.
  • Ability to collaborate with others and to effectively manage and prioritize a large portfolio.
  • Experience working with elected officials, leading matrixed and multi-disciplinary teams, conducting community engagement activities, and developing staff.
  • Ability to communicate complex issues with a broad range of audiences.
  • A demonstrated commitment to equity, safety, and sustainability.

Other Requirements:

Work Environment / Physical Demands:

  • Work is typically performed in a hybrid work environment in which a minimum of 3 days of the work is completed in a City office, and 2 days of the work is completed remotely in a regular 40-hour work week.

The City's full salary range for this position is $59.75 - $89.61 Hourly.
