The division of planning strives to not only continue these practices but make advances that will utilize citizens in a greater capacity in continuing to develop growth strategies that allow the City to prosper.

The Division of Planning is seeking to fill 3 vacancies for Principal Planner in 3 different sections. The Principal Planner is the right hand for the Planning Manager, both advising and standing in for the Manager when needed. The Principal Planner is the first-line coordinator for the work of the Senior Planners, including project and budget management, strategic planning, plan implementation, and staff coordination for projects across multiple divisions of government. The Principal Planner may serve as an additional project manager. The 3 sections and their responsibilities:

  • The community outreach and strategic planning section team is responsible for implementing associated tasks and projects related to the comprehensive plans, small area plans, and corridor studies, ensuring public input and education is priority, and determining needs to successfully complete new projects.
  • The long-range planning section is responsible for the development of Lexington's Comprehensive Plan, Urban Growth Master Plan, Preservation and Urban Growth Program, and the Downtown Area Masterplan as well as other small area plans.
  • The transportation section is responsible for all aspects of highway and transit planning including the Lexington Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), long range transportation planning, land use and transportation coordination, Transportation Improvement Program, congestion management, complete streets development, and bicycle and pedestrian planning.

Critical skills and strengths of an ideal candidate would include the ability to:

  • Effectively and confidently write, speak, and present information to residents and community organizations
  • Work independently and collaboratively with a team
  • Build effective working relationships with elected and appointed officials
  • Prioritize and coordinate multiple work assignments and projects
  • Display a high level of independent judgment and problem-solving skills

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • Four (4) years of related experience
  • Additional years of related education may substitute for years of experience
  • Additional years of related experience may substitute for years of education

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Coordinates and develops plans, projects, and programming for assigned section
  • Oversees compliance with federal, state, and local laws to ensure funding eligibility, as assigned
  • Represents LFUCG and the division at various internal and external Boards, Commissions, Committees, and other applicable meetings
  • Coordinates with other divisions, departments, and outside agencies to help complete projects and recommendations for the assigned section
  • Prepares and manages resolutions, ordinances, contracts, and other documents needed to optimize operations
  • Assists the planning manager in leading the daily activities of the section to include, but not limited to, supervising, training, and evaluating the work of subordinate staff and/or consultants, scheduling, reporting, and contract administration
  • Assists, advises, and provides information to elected and appointed officials, internal and external partners, legal and design professionals, and citizens
  • Researches, analyzes, develops, and presents data and recommendations to the public, Planning Commission, and other related agencies and stakeholders
