The City of Sebastopol is seeking a skilled, enthusiastic, adaptable, qualified candidate to fill the Associate Planner position. The Associate Planner performs various complex, professional-level office and field planning work related to current and advanced municipal planning, including the review of development and land use applications, zoning, site plans, and environmental documents. The successful candidate will provide professional advice and assistance to the public on planning, zoning, permits, and environmental review. In addition, the Associate Planner provides complex professional staff assistance to the Community Development Director, other departments, and the public. This position requires the ability to exercise sound judgment in the interpretation, application, and explanation of a wide variety of City policies, procedures, and regulations as well as applicable local, State, and Federal laws.

IDEAL CANDIDATE:
The ideal candidate will:
- Possess knowledge and experience in reading basic site and building plans and maps, such as Zoning Maps, Assessor's Parcel Maps, and similar planning-related maps.
- Possess the ability to type, use PC-based word-processing software, and have basic computer skills.
- Possess GIS or other permitting or planning software skills (highly desired).
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax.
- Independently organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments.
- Be detail-oriented and able to perform the full scope of assigned duties.
- Successfully use initiative and independent judgment.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The Associate Planner should have knowledge and/or experience with a wide variety of current and/or advanced planning projects and issues. Ability to interact in a positive and helpful manner with members of the public, City staff, and other agencies. Possession of a strong work ethic and sound organizational skills.
Education: A Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in City Planning or a closely-related field. A Master's degree in a relevant field may substitute for up to one year of experience.
Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of professional planning experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Municipal or regional planning experience preferred but not required.
License and Certifications:
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver's license.
- Possession of AICP certification is desired.

- Life Ins. - $50,000 for employee. Increased coverage may be purchased by employee.
- Long-term and Short-term Disability Ins. - 60% of salary for employee. Benefit is non- taxable income.
- PERS Pension Plan: 2% @ 62 for PEPRA Members (hired after 01/01/13) or 2% @ 55 for Classic Members (transferred from another agency within 6 months). Uniform Allowance is not PERS able income for PEPRA members.
