Primary Duty:

Under basic supervision, the Intern will support the department by providing a variety of duties in all areas of the department.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform data analysis tasks, including qualitative and quantitative data gathering, tabulation, classification, analyses, and visual representation.
  • Review local, regional, state, and federal policies and planning documents to offer analytical reports and recommendations for improvement.
  • Assist with meeting agendas, attend meetings, and make presentations on assigned topics.
  • Conduct research to support agency needs.
  • Prepare research materials and create and maintain PowerPoint presentations.
  • Manage databases and input information, data, and records.
  • Support the Active Transportation Plan update, focusing on improving bike and pedestrian infrastructure.
  • Research urban planning strategies for active transportation solutions.
  • Manage and analyze transportation data to support planning efforts and contribute to data-driven decision making.
  • Use GIS tools to map and visualize active transportation networks.
  • Assist in preparing maps, reports, and other planning materials.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and cooperation when interacting with local, regional, state, and federal partners, citizens, visitors, and City staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality of work-related issues, and matters internal to Waco MPO and the City of Waco.
  • Performs other related and assigned duties as required.

Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge:

  • Strong interest in active transportation, urban planning, and sustainable mobility.
  • Proficiency in GIS software and data analysis tools.
  • Knowledge of transportation planning principles.
  • Legal, ethical, and professional rules of conduct for government employees.

Skills:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with moderate direction and in a collaborative team.
  • Strong time management skills and flexibility in adapting to changing tasks and priorities.
  • Ability to interact effectively at all levels and across diverse cultures.
  • Proven success in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers and stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications:

4 years of college AND preferred enrollment in a graduate program at a higher education institution pursuing a degree or certification within a related field of study of the department; a 3.0 (out of a 4-point scale) overall GPA preferred.
