Beginning in 1981, Clanton & Associates has combined design and technical excellence in lighting and electrical systems for transportation, urban environments, master planning, lighting policy development, civic, academic, and daylighting projects. We work in a hybrid mode between our office in north Boulder, CO and from home.
POSITION SUMMARY
Clanton is growing! We are adding a full-time Lighting Planner position to our team. This position involves developing outdoor lighting master plans, guidelines, policies, and ordinances for leading cities and states in support of our Architecture + Lighting Planning & Policy studio. This is an exciting opportunity at the intersection of planning, design and engineering and we are open to many combinations of education, skills, and experience.

PRIMARY ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lighting Policy & Planning – Develop lighting master plans, policy documents, and strategic implementation plans that align with municipal, county, and state needs.
- Regulatory & Technical Expertise – Interpret and apply zoning laws, dark sky ordinances, and environmental regulations while drafting lighting guidelines.
- Research & Analysis – Conduct demographic, environmental, and site-specific research to inform lighting strategies and policy recommendations.
- Community Engagement & Communication – Collaborate with stakeholders, facilitate public engagement sessions, and create visual presentations.
- Interdisciplinary Coordination – Work with engineers, planners, GIS specialists, and other experts to integrate lighting with planning, safety, and sustainability goals.
- Site Assessments & Emerging Trends – Conduct field visits to document existing conditions and stays current with advancements in lighting, transportation, urban design and environmental policy. Approximate 15% travel anticipated.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIRED SKILLS
- Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or Architectural Engineering
- Professional written and verbal communication skills, and active listening skills
- Familiarity with relevant codes & standards including Dark Sky and IES
- Proficiency with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Sketchup, and graphic design skills
PREFERRED SKILLS AND CREDENTIALS
- Masters of Urban Planning or Public Policy
- Experience with ordinance update and drafting processes
- Ability to lead conversations and meetings with multiple perspectives
- Experience in community engagement for master planning & policy projects, long- range planning, active transportation projects or similar
