The City of Rancho Cordova is excited to announce that we are accepting applications for a Planning Technician I position in the Community Development Department.

Position Snapshot/A Day in the Life: The Planning Department is seeking an enthusiastic candidate with a customer service mindset and a planning background that will serve as one of the faces at the Planning Department front counter. The incumbent will bridge the gap between the public and the Planning Department by providing answers to questions regarding zoning, development use regulations, and the planning entitlement process to the public and development community over the phone and at the Planning Department front counter. Additionally, the incumbent will monitor the submittal of planning entitlements through our electronic permitting system (EnerGov) and will have the opportunity to work on some small-scale projects to gain experience and insight on questions that are asked by the public and development community.

The Ideal Candidate has 2+ years of experience providing superb in-person customer service related to planning, construction or architecture. The most successful candidates are working towards their career in planning, with coursework in urban planning, architecture, engineering, or a related field. Experience in permitting, plan review or inspection processes is highly desired.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS & MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education:

  • Equivalent to the completion of a high school diploma.
    • College coursework in a related field such as urban planning, mathematics, construction, building inspection, drafting, architecture or plan review is desirable.

Experience:

  • Two (2) years of experience performing customer service and performing clerical functions in support of planning/construction/building/design trades or related fields.
    • Experience in non-technical permitting, plan review, or inspection process via an internship or similar work experience is preferred.

License or Certification:

  • Possession of a valid California driver's license.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENTS:

Depending upon assignment, work extended hours, including attending meetings during and after business hours. Requires the mobility and manual dexterity to work in a standard office environment, use standard office equipment and attend off-site meetings; speech and hearing to communicate in person and by telephone; vision to read handwritten and printed materials and a computer screen; and strength and agility to lift and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds. On a continuous basis work in an office environment sitting at a desk for long periods of time; travel from job site to job site sitting in a vehicle; bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist while performing field work; may be exposed to dust, noise machinery, moving objects and other vehicles while performing field work; may work on uneven or slippery surfaces; and may intermittently perform field work while exposed to various types of weather including extreme heat during summer months and cold temperatures during the winter months. Some accommodations may be made for some physical demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodations.
