This Director of Development position earns a competitive salary of $82,953 - $109,005/year, depending on experience and qualifications. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF OUR DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT
As our Director of Development, you coordinate and direct the planning and development efforts for our county under the general direction of our county administrator. You also carry out the County Commissioners' economic development vision. Your expert advice about planning-related issues is invaluable to the County Administrator, boards, commissions, and elected officials.
You provide direct supervision over the Development Services Department which includes issuing building permits, inspections, alcohol licensing, zoning, and retail inspections. Under your excellent leadership, employees are inspired to take pride in their work for our county. You provide the training and support that they need to excel in their jobs. You always ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws, maintaining all necessary files and records.
To businesses and residences requesting services from the Development Services Department, you are the face of our county government and act as a community liaison. You tap into your working knowledge of practical and lawful applications of rules and regulations in order to disseminate proper advice to potential applicants. You are collaborative and always work to achieve a mutually agreeable and beneficial outcome.
Applying research and analysis, you manage complex and sensitive professional planning projects. You also oversee specialized planning functions such as large-scale new development proposals and environmental studies, as well as provide overall management of division-related planning issues. In compliance with the National Flood Insurance Program, you review proposed development in special flood hazard areas and issue floodplain development permits.
Always looking for ways to improve, you prepare reports on operations and activities. You also participate in the preparation and administration of our budget, carefully monitoring and controlling expenditures. QUALIFICATIONS FOR AN DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT
- Bachelor's degree in urban planning, public administration, or a closely related field
- 5 years of experience in the urban planning and development profession
- Thorough knowledge of policies and procedures for local government planning and development
- Thorough knowledge of zoning, land use law, transportation, and economic development
- Understanding of basic environmental engineering concepts such as drainage, simple hydrology, and erosion
- Familiarity with techniques for the effective preparation and presentation of technical reports
- Ability to maintain knowledge of pertinent state and local laws, codes, and regulations including any recent changes
- Understanding of economic development principles, including how to attract new businesses as well as retain existing businesses
- Budgeting skills
- Strong computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office, internet applications, econometric and transportation modeling, database management, and GIS
- Strong leadership skills
Three years of supervisory experience and certification as a flood plain administrator are preferred but multiple factors will be taken into consideration. American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification would be a plus.
