Associate Planner – Southwest Missouri Council of Governments (SMCOG)

The Southwest Missouri Council of Governments (SMCOG), staffed by the Center for Resource Planning and Management (CRPM) at Missouri State University, is seeking an Associate Planner to join our award-winning planning team. SMCOG serves 10 counties and 78 municipalities, helping local governments and regional partners plan for growth, improve infrastructure, and strengthen community development.

About the Role

The Associate Planner will support a wide range of planning projects with an emphasis on transportation planning and comprehensive planning. This role will assist with managing the region's transportation planning program, including multi-modal projects that consider roadway, transit, pedestrian, and bicycle needs. The Associate Planner will also help prepare long-range community plans, including comprehensive plans, land use maps, and small-area studies, ensuring they reflect the vision and goals of local residents and decision-makers.

The position will involve direct collaboration with local governments, participation in public meetings, and preparation of staff reports and planning documents. In addition, the Associate Planner will work alongside and help mentor student interns from Missouri State University, contributing to a supportive learning environment while delivering high-quality planning services.

Minimum Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in planning, geography, public administration, or a related field.
  • At least one year of relevant professional planning experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, interns, public officials, and community stakeholders.
  • Commitment to both technical accuracy and practical, implementable planning solutions.

Experience with GIS, transportation planning, or long-range planning projects is preferred but not required.
