Position Summary

The Senior Research Associate will join the Terner Center's growing research team to advance the use of innovative construction methods in housing delivery. This senior-level role will:

  • Lead and design research projects.
  • Develop conceptual and policy frameworks.
  • Identify new partnerships and funding opportunities.
  • Communicate research findings to academic, policy, industry, and public audiences.

The position reports to the Associate Research Director of Land Use and Supply and will collaborate with senior staff across the Terner Center and Terner Labs.

Responsibilities

  • 25% Research Design & Oversight - Lead major research projects, supervise consultants/student researchers, ensure accuracy of deliverables.
  • 15% Communications Collaboration - Translate research into accessible outputs (reports, blogs, webinars, data visualizations).
  • 15% Partnerships & Fundraising - Build industry, policy, and philanthropic networks; develop funding strategies.
  • 15% Proposal Development - Draft research proposals with senior staff.
  • 10% Supervision - Recruit, train, and supervise research analysts and graduate students; manage HR matters.
  • 5% Technical Assistance - Provide expertise in data management, analysis, and interpretation.
  • 5% Policy Monitoring - Track housing-related policy, research, and government activities.
  • 5% Representation - Present research at conferences, seminars, and collaborative events.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong organizational, project management, and communication skills.
  • Research or industry background in housing and construction.
  • Knowledge of industrialized/off-site/prefabricated construction methods and building codes.
  • Experience communicating technical findings to non-academic audiences.
  • Proven ability to build collaborations across sectors (industry, nonprofit, academic, government).
  • Managerial experience overseeing complex research or academic programs.
  • Fundraising and proposal development experience.
  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Experience with qualitative methods (e.g., interviews, case studies).
  • Commitment to equity and sustainability in housing research.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in architecture, engineering, construction, housing development, or policy-related research.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent training/experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in construction, engineering, building science, public policy/administration, or real estate.

Salary & Benefits

  • Range: $112,400 - $163,200 (budgeted range; final offer based on experience, education, and internal equity).
