JOB DESCRIPTION

Join Interval: Planning Associate I & II

Interval is a planning and policy advisory firm that helps public sector clients better understand, implement, and improve their plans, policies, codes, regulations, and processes. Founded in 2023, Interval brings a systems-level perspective to local government challenges, helping agencies align vision with implementation through clear strategy, collaborative governance, and measurable outcomes.

Interval works across three core practice areas:

  • Comprehensive Planning and Policy. Preparing new plans and updates, conducting plan audits and implementation reviews, and supporting policy development, amendments, and facilitation using a model of adaptive comprehensive planning that treats implementation as an essential stage of a plan’s success
  • Codes and Standards. Reviewing zoning and development codes alongside the full stack of building, fire, and utility regulations, with particular attention to housing supply and production barriers
  • Development Process and Implementation. Auditing permitting and inspection workflows, building process improvement roadmaps, and supporting training, coaching, and change management with an emphasis on measurable results

Across all three areas, Interval’s approach is grounded in the belief that good plans, codes, and processes only matter if they’re usable – by staff, by applicants, and by the communities they’re meant to serve. The firm works alongside planning departments as a trusted extension of their team, bringing outside perspective without losing sight of local context, to help communities close the gap between the plans they write and the outcomes they need.

We’re growing, and we’re looking for two planners to grow with us.

Location: Remote or hybrid; occasional in-person collaboration expected as the team grows, with the eventual expectation of periodic time together in Memphis or a future Midwest branch office.

Associate II (Salary range: $85,000–$110,000)

We’re looking for a planner who can own a workstream with minimal oversight and represent Interval credibly in front of clients. You’ll move fluidly across our three practice areas – one week working on a comprehensive plan, the next auditing a zoning ordinance against housing production goals, the next diving into permitting data to diagnose where a city’s review process breaks down.

You will:

  • Lead components of comprehensive plans, code updates, and process improvement engagements from research through delivery
  • Review and draft zoning, building, fire, and utility code language, and evaluate existing codes against housing supply and production goals
  • Audit permitting and inspection workflows and analyze development review data to surface findings that drive recommendations
  • Facilitate client and stakeholder conversations
  • Support training, coaching, and change management with client staff
  • Mentor Associate I hires and help build repeatable methodology as the firm scales

You bring:

  • 4+ years in planning, land use, or municipal/regulatory consulting
  • Working knowledge of comprehensive planning, zoning and development codes, and other regulations
  • Comfort moving between qualitative policy work and quantitative data analysis
  • Strong writing skills; plans and code language demand different voices, and you can bring both
  • Self-direction; you don’t need heavy oversight to keep a workstream moving

Associate I (Salary range: $65,000–$90,000)

We’re looking for a planner early in their career who’s smart, curious, and ready to work across comprehensive planning, codes, and process improvement rather than specializing narrowly on day one.

You will:

  • Support plan development: research, drafting, community engagement materials, GIS/mapping support
  • Assist in reviewing and drafting zoning, building, fire, and utility regulations
  • Help audit permitting and inspection workflows and analyze review process data to identify inefficiencies
  • Prepare materials for client meetings and public engagement

You bring:

  • 0-3 years in planning or a related field (or a master’s in planning/related field plus relevant internship experience)
  • Familiarity with zoning fundamentals and comprehensive planning concepts
  • Strong writing and analytical skills; comfort with data (Excel at minimum)
  • Eagerness to learn multiple sides of planning practice rather than staying in one lane
