JOB DESCRIPTION

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is hiring multiple Senior Transportation Planners in the Santa Fe office! The Senior Transportation Planners are part of the Multimodal Planning and Programs Bureau in the Planning Division. Duties may include serving as a Planning Liaison to Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) and Regional Transportation Planning Organizations (RTPOs), including coordinating on program administration; managing federally funded programs and projects, such as the Transportation Alternatives Program; assisting the Bureau with the development and implementation of multimodal transportation plans; assisting the State's Bicycle, Pedestrian, Equestrian Coordinator with statewide multimodal project development and review, especially as it pertains to bicycle and pedestrian planning; and other duties as assigned. The Bureau recently underwent a reorganization and reclassified a number of positions to the State's new Senior Planner classification, which more accurately reflects the complex nature of the team's work.

The position is full time and in-person in Santa Fe, NM. The job posting closes on 8/21/2026 and may be used to fill multiple vacancies.

The ideal candidate will have preferred education and/or experience in the following:
* Education and/or certification in Urban, Regional, Transportation or Community Planning
* Experience working as a Planner, Program Administrator or Policy Analyst for a governmental entity.
* Interest in and knowledge of best practices in bicycle and pedestrian planning.
* Experience managing federal grants and familiarity with the applicable requirements.
* Experience with transportation planning.
* Strong organizational and communication skills.
* Flexibility and a strong sense of teamwork.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in planning, architecture, business administration, public administration, or political science and one (1) year of experience to include urban transportation or infrastructure planning, real estate, commercial or public land usage, grant management, procurement, working with contracts, right of way appraisal, inter-agency coordination, engineering design, business administration, and/or economics. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling five (5) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
