ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1. Manages, supervises, coordinates, researches and analyzes planning, zoning, building,
and other community development activities, programs and projects.
2. Develops, reviews, updates, and implements the Long Range Plan, the zoning ordinance,
other planning documents, and other City Council policies; interprets planning and planning-related ordinances and laws and advises citizens.
3. Develops and implements the planning, zoning, housing, code enforcement, and development goals, objectives, policies and priorities; represents the City in development and
land use matters; participates in numerous public meetings.
4. Develops, implements and maintains public and community relations’ activities related to
planning, building, and community issues.
5. Supervises the Building Official and oversees the enforcement and compliance of building and zoning ordinances; supervises and participates in reviewing and making recommendations on zoning and permit applications, site plans, and architectural designs; enCity of Ada, Oklahoma Director of Community Development
ensures that development proposals conform to the Long Range Plan and other applicable plans and regulations.
6. Reviews and makes recommendations on all proposed projects within the City including
residential, commercial, and industrial projects; coordinates review and comments on all
projects with City departments and other agencies as necessary.
7. Selects, supervises, trains and evaluates staff; supervises the preparation and administration of the department budget; resolves difficult and complex planning and administrative
policy questions.
8. Provides professional assistance on a variety of City matters to the Ada Area Metropolitan Planning and Zoning Commission, the City Manager, and the City Council.
9. Meets with a variety of citizens, governmental representatives, technical experts, and developers on physical issues facing the City including traffic, facilities design, subsidized
housing sites, parking, commercial development, zoning, and neighborhood improvements.
10. Prepares and presents statistical analysis, proposals, reports and special projects to the
Assistant City Manager, City Manager, Ada Area Metropolitan Planning and Zoning
Commission, and City Council.
11. Assists property owners, developers, builders, attorneys, and special interest groups to
process applications and meet planning and building requirements.
12. Works with the Pontotoc County, other cities, and local, State and Federal agencies on
joint programs, regional and sub-regional issues; researches, analyzes and recommends
policy approaches to legislation and urban development and improvement.
13. Performs code enforcement, supervises code enforcement staff, and ensures the proper
filing of planning records and reports.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience/Education
Sufficient experience and education in urban and environmental planning to coordinate and conduct the City’s planning and development activities. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited educational institution with a major in urban or regional planning or other closely-related field and five years of responsible, professional governmental planning experience, including at least two years in a supervisory capacity. A Master's Degree in Planning or Public Administration and experience with community and economic development issues is highly desirable.
