solar energy

The city's zoning code defines nine solar-related terms, including solar access, different types of solar energy systems, and solar skyspace and easements (Sec. 154.127).

The code permits accessory solar installations as long as the energy is used for on-site consumption, and free standing and building mounted systems follow size and location restrictions (Sec. 154.56). Freestanding systems are subject to height restrictions as well as square footage limitations for single-family lots of less than 20,000 SF; building-mounted systems are allowed on roofs and facades and subject to height and projection limitations. Solar easements that extend across continuous or nearby lots to protect the solar access of existing or intended collectors may be created and recorded with the county (Sec.154.56.E and Sec. 154.62.C). The code provides illustrations of solar energy systems (Sec. 154.59).

Within the subdivision regulations, definitions are provided (Sec. 151.04) and standards are given for the location and orientation of lots to improve solar access (Sec.151.06.F)
